Cloudflare, Mastercard partner on cyber tools for small businesses

Cloudflare and Mastercard announced a partnership to develop cybersecurity tools aimed at small businesses, critical infrastructure, and governments.

The collaboration will combine Mastercard’s Recorded Future and RiskRecon attack surface monitoring with Cloudflare’s application security portfolio to identify and secure internet-facing assets.

Organizations will be able to gain real-time views of their cyber posture through a unified dashboard, which provides security ratings based on vulnerabilities, authentication issues, and third-party risks.

The partnership also enables automatic security controls, such as web application firewalls and encryption, to address identified threats.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The partnership targets organisations often described as “target rich but resource poor”

  • The joint effort focuses on organisations described as “target rich but resource poor,” including small businesses, governments, and critical infrastructure organisations 1.
  • Cloudflare says these groups face attacks more often than global enterprise or Fortune 500 organizations 1.
  • Mastercard says small businesses make up about half of the world’s GDP, which raises the stakes for protecting them 1.
  • PYMNTS Intelligence research cited by PYMNTS found 43% of phishing attacks were tied to compromised vendors, which adds supply chain risk 2.

Mastercard is expanding beyond payments into cybersecurity and risk intelligence

  • The partnership marks Mastercard’s push beyond card transactions into digital security work, though neither company shares commercial terms or revenue impact 3.
  • The deal links attack surface monitoring from Mastercard’s Recorded Future and RiskRecon with Cloudflare’s Application Security portfolio 1.
  • Attack surface monitoring uses tools that help identify and assess internet-facing systems and exposures, which can help smaller organisations act sooner 1.
  • For Cloudflare, the arrangement offers another way to serve underserved organisations, though it does not quantify “millions of small businesses” as a distribution channel 1.
  • The collaboration fits a wider shift toward packaged security tools that are easier for smaller organisations to adopt 4.
