Cloudflare boosts Southeast Asia’s AI growth with open-source models
Cloudflare has expanded support for national AI initiatives in India, Japan, and Southeast Asia by making locally developed open-source language models available on its Workers AI platform.
Cloudflare, a US-based cloud services provider, said these models aim to help countries build AI solutions that reflect their linguistic and cultural contexts.
For Southeast Asia, Cloudflare has added SEA-LION v4-27B, an open-source large language model designed for regional languages such as Bahasa Indonesia, Bahasa Malaysia, Thai, Vietnamese, and Tamil.
The company is now offering India’s AI4Bharat IndicTrans2, which translates text across 22 Indic languages, and Japan’s Preferred Networks PLaMo-Embedding-1B, a Japanese text embedding model supported by the country’s Generative AI Accelerator Challenge.
These efforts align with government-backed strategies in each country focused on digital inclusion and AI accessibility.
Cloudflare said its distributed network allows developers to deploy these models globally, aiming to lower barriers for local organizations to adopt AI.
