Cloudflare acquires software startup Deno to strengthen Workers

Cloudflare said on October 9 that it was acquiring Deno, a US-based startup behind the runtime of the same name, to strengthen Workers, its platform for building and running software on its network.

Cloudflare Workers principal engineer Kenton Varda said the acquisition would improve the Workers programming model and platform. In separate blog posts, Cloudflare and Deno said Deno was joining Cloudflare.

The company also open-sourced workerd, the runtime behind Workers.

The acquisition could strengthen Cloudflare’s position in edge and serverless developer tools. Workers is a serverless platform, while Vercel offers a competing functions product.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Deno, co-founded by Bert Belder and Node.js creator Ryan Dahl, had raised US$26 million, including a series A round led by Sequoia.
