Cloud startup Fluidstack eyes $1b raise at $18b valuation

Fluidstack, a cloud infrastructure startup now based in New York, is in talks to raise about US$1 billion at a target valuation of US$18 billion, people familiar with the matter said.

Jane Street and Situational Awareness are discussing co-leading the round, with Morgan Stanley advising. The deal is not final, and the terms may change.

The company was valued at about US$7.5 billion in an earlier round this year that included Situational Awareness, and it recently announced a US$50 billion deal with Anthropic to build custom data centers.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Fluidstack’s valuation leans on partners plus reused energy sites

  • Fluidstack is a “neocloud” provider, a newer type of cloud company. It supplies large clusters of graphics processing units (GPUs) to customers, plus works with partners to build dedicated computing capacity 1.
  • Its fast expansion depends on former Bitcoin miners such as TeraWulf and Cipher Mining. They are converting power-heavy industrial sites into new data centers 23.
  • Big tech also supports the approach. Google, which has invested in Anthropic, has taken stakes in TeraWulf and Cipher, plus backed financing tied to the projects 2.

Custom AI infrastructure opens a path for hard-hit Bitcoin miners

  • The company’s US$50 billion deal with Anthropic signals a shift. AI firms are moving past renting standard cloud capacity, then ordering custom-built infrastructure tuned to their workloads 4.
  • That demand gives Bitcoin miners a fresh revenue line. Many are emerging from a severe profitability crisis by offering land plus power for high-performance computing (HPC) data centers, which are facilities built for very intensive computing tasks 5.
  • Cipher Mining and TeraWulf are leaning toward long-term contracts for AI plus HPC infrastructure. They want steadier cash flow than Bitcoin mining alone 6.
