Clean iron startup Electra raises $186m for renewable plant

Electra, a company focused on decarbonizing iron production, has raised US$186 million in a series B funding round.

The financing was co-led by Capricorn Investment Group and Temasek Holdings, increasing the firm’s total funding to US$214 million.

The funding round also included participation from Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Builders Vision, and Lowercarbon Capital, along with strategic investors such as BHP Ventures, Rio Tinto, and Nucor.

Electra plans to use the funds to build a demonstration plant in Colorado later this year.

The plant is expected to produce high-purity iron, which will be tested and qualified by partners before a commercial facility is established by the end of the decade.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Decarbonizing steel represents an essential but challenging climate opportunity

The steel industry is responsible for approximately 7% of global CO2 emissions, making it one of the largest industrial contributors to climate change 1.

Electra’s technology addresses a critical bottleneck in steel’s environmental impact: the iron production process, which traditionally relies on coal-powered blast furnaces operating at extremely high temperatures.

Their approach represents a significant departure from traditional ironmaking technologies that have evolved incrementally since the Bessemer process revolutionized production in the 1850s 2.

The industry’s historical resistance to fundamental change stems from capital-intensive infrastructure with decades-long lifespans and tight profit margins, explaining why breakthrough technologies like Electra’s have been slow to emerge despite steel’s substantial carbon footprint.

Electra’s innovation is particularly significant because it tackles the most emissions-intensive part of steelmaking rather than focusing solely on secondary processing or efficiency improvements.

2️⃣ Strategic investors signal a value chain in transition

Electra’s investor lineup reflects an alignment across the entire steel value chain—from mining companies (Rio Tinto, BHP) to steel producers (Nucor, Yamato Kogyo) to end users (automotive supply chain companies).

This cross-value chain investment approach differs from previous clean tech waves where investors typically came from either financial or single-industry strategic backgrounds.
