🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Nature-tech VC stays fragmented amid rising rules
- Superorganism’s US$25.9m fund enters a market where climate tech drew $38B in venture capital (VC) and made up roughly 16% of global VC in 2024 1. Biodiversity-focused tools were not among the top-funded climate tech segments 1.
- Ahead of COP30 in November 2025, over 733 organizations across 56 countries committed to Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) reporting with $22.4 trillion in assets under management (AUM) 2. Impact startup funding was projected at $33B in 2024, down 28% from 2023 3, leaving a gap between disclosure pledges and capital for nature-focused solutions.
- The fund’s size signals an early market for biodiversity tech, while transport drew $19B of climate tech funding in 2024 1.
TNFD timelines create near-term customer openings for biodiversity vendors
- Portfolio companies like Spoor, which monitors bird migration impact, can sell to 129 financial institutions registered as TNFD Adopters by October 2024 4. It includes 25% of systemically important banks (large institutions whose distress could threaten the wider financial system) 4 for fiscal years (FY) 2024–2026 disclosures.
- Business-to-Business (B2B) software startups in Superorganism’s portfolio can prioritize 63% of early TNFD reporters who rank nature risks as equal to or higher than climate risks 5.
- The addition of FY2026 to the TNFD timeline 4 opens a window through 2026 for biodiversity Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) vendors to lock in product-market fit. Investors can time Series A (first significant venture round) around proven traction before any shift to mandatory rules.
