Circle begins IPO, targets nearly $6b valuation
Circle, the issuer of USDC stablecoin, has filed for an IPO to raise US$624 million, valuing the company at around US$6 billion.
The offering includes 24 million shares, with Circle selling 9.6 million and existing shareholders offering 14.4 million at US$24 to US$26 per share.
This pricing values the firm at about US$5.65 billion, or US$6.7 billion when including outstanding options and stock, according to Reuters
ARK Investment Management, led by Cathie Wood, has shown interest in acquiring up to US$150 million worth of shares.
Circle’s shares will be listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker “CRCL”.
The IPO coincides with upcoming US stablecoin regulations and may impact Coinbase, which co-founded USDC and shares its revenue.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ IPO valuation reflects stablecoin market’s competitive realities
Circle’s $6 billion valuation reflects the challenging competitive landscape in the stablecoin market, where the company remains a distant second player.
Despite USDC’s $62 billion in circulation, it holds just 27% market share compared to Tether’s dominant 67% position, highlighting the significant gap Circle must overcome to achieve market leadership1.
USDC has demonstrated stronger percentage growth—increasing by 40% this year versus Tether’s 10%—but the absolute gap remains substantial, with recent data showing Tether’s market cap at $146 billion compared to USDC’s $56 billion1.
The IPO comes as the stablecoin market shows signs of maturation, with USDT and USDC together commanding approximately 90% of the total stablecoin market capitalization, creating high barriers to entry for new competitors1.
Circle’s transparency-focused approach appeals particularly to institutional investors requiring regulatory clarity, potentially creating a differentiated growth path despite Tether’s overall market dominance2.
2️⃣ Regulatory tailwinds could dramatically reshape stablecoin economics
Circle’s IPO timing aligns strategically with unprecedented regulatory momentum, as the Senate recently advanced the GENIUS Act with a 66-32 bipartisan vote, signaling the first comprehensive stablecoin framework in the U.S.3.
