Chrome rolls out vertical tabs for easier multitasking
Chrome is rolling out an option to move tabs to the side of the browser window, giving users a vertical tabs layout that stays on by default until changed, and is being released gradually in all markets.
Users can turn on the feature by right-clicking a Chrome window and selecting “Show Tabs Vertically,” and it works with separate windows and tab groups like the standard top tab bar.
Chrome is also updating Reading Mode with a full-page text view that becomes the default version of the tool, while Google tested side tabs years earlier without a wider launch.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Vertical tabs could advance Google’s AI workflow ambitions
- Vertical tabs pick up a design approach made popular by Arc, a browser made by The Browser Company that uses a vertical sidebar to cut tab clutter and reshape how people move around the web 1.
- Google is already testing a “Projects” panel inside its vertical tabs layout 2.
- Projects groups related tabs. It may also connect Gemini, Google’s AI assistant, chat conversations to the same set, which could keep research and task work in one place 2.
The browser war shifts toward integrated AI workflow
- Browser competition is moving away from speed and rendering toward integrated, AI-powered workflows. This market could grow from US$4.5 billion in 2024 to US$76.8 billion by 2034 3.
- This shift tightens the squeeze on challengers like Arc, since their tab and workspace ideas often end up copied by larger browsers over time 1.
- Chrome’s 65.4% market share lets it turn niche features into standard options fast. Smaller browser companies then need new ways to stand out beyond layout or organization tools 4.
