Chips, cars boost South Korea’s record $185b exports in Q3
South Korea exported US$185 billion worth of goods in Q3 2025, marking a new quarterly record, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources.
Exports in the first nine months of 2025 totaled US$519.7 billion, up 2.2% year-on-year.
The growth was mainly driven by higher shipments of semiconductors, automobiles, biohealth products, and ships.
Semiconductor exports reached US$119.7 billion from January to September, while auto exports hit US$54.1 billion, both the highest ever for the period.
Cosmetics and agro-fisheries also set records at US$8.5 billion and US$9.3 billion, respectively.
Government officials said they are in talks with the US to address tariff issues, and plan to work with private industry to support export growth.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Korea’s export gains hide deep changes that need a rethink
- Q3 exports hit $185 billion, yet sectors moved in opposite directions. Semiconductor export value rose 52.2% in 1H24 1. Tariffs bit other groups, with U.S.-bound autos down 16.4% in 1H25 and steel weaker under 50% U.S. tariffs covering steel plus related derivatives 2.
- This creates concentration risk since chips now exceed 20% of shipments 2. China takes 30% of Korea’s chip sales 2, yet deliveries there fell 10.6% in 1H25 2. That drop marks market-share erosion in the largest chip market, which cosmetics and agro-fisheries growth cannot offset.
- Korean automakers build under 40% of U.S. sales locally, versus Toyota above 55% 2. They stay exposed to tariffs regardless of any trade deal, which calls for a broader U.S. footprint rethink.
Korean port bottlenecks open near-term chances for logistics firms
- Busan port faces two-day berthing delays from mega-vessel bunching 3. Higher Q3 volumes will stretch capacity through year-end as container lines juggle deployments amid trade uncertainty 4.
- This gridlock lifts demand for port visibility platforms for real-time vessel and cargo tracking. Shippers also seek automated scheduling for berth and truck slots, plus warehouse tools to smooth flow when yard density nears limits.
- Cold-chain providers and specialized warehouses can ride growth in cosmetics at $8.5 billion, with agro-fisheries at $9.3 billion 2. Sites near Busan and Incheon can buffer delays, as cosmetics shipments rose despite softer China demand 2.
