CHIPS Act’s $280b funding faces uncertainty under Trump
With less than a month before United States President-elect Donald Trump takes office, outgoing President Joe Biden’s administration is working to secure billions in funding under the CHIPS and Science Act, a law signed in 2022.
The law allocated US$280 billion to boost United States semiconductor research and manufacturing.
This includes US$39 billion in subsidies, loans, and tax credits for both domestic and foreign firms.
Despite bipartisan support, Trump has criticized the law and raised concerns about its future, particularly regarding foreign chipmakers like Taiwan.
The CHIPS Act currently includes 24 recipients, with US-based companies like Intel and Asian firms such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and Samsung committing to projects.
While Trump cannot revoke the act directly, analysts suggest he could impact its execution, potentially limiting funds or renegotiating agreements as part of his cost-cutting efforts.
