TSMC to focus on expansion, tariff impact at investor meeting

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) will hold its investor conference on April 17, 2025.

Investors are expected to focus on the company’s capital expenditure plans and global expansion amid economic and trade uncertainties.

Analysts are monitoring TSMC’s US$100 billion investment plan in Arizona, which includes two wafer fabs, two IC assembly plants, and a research and development center.

It aims to mitigate potential impacts from US tariffs on semiconductors.

Recent changes in US trade policies have created additional uncertainty.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ TSMC’s diversification strategy balances geopolitical risk against profitability

TSMC’s $100 billion expansion in Arizona reveals a deliberate strategy to reduce geopolitical vulnerabilities while maintaining its technological edge.

This investment follows ongoing trade tensions, with analysts noting that the expansion will help TSMC “mitigate geopolitical risks and trade policy uncertainties, particularly concerning tariffs” 1.

Despite this massive US investment, Taiwan will remain TSMC’s manufacturing stronghold, with TrendForce projecting that by 2035, Taiwan will still host over 80% of TSMC’s production capacity while US operations will reach only 6% 2.

This approach reflects the economic reality that US production facilities take longer to achieve profitability compared to Taiwan’s operations, according to S&P Global assessments 2.

The expansion demonstrates how leading semiconductor companies are adjusting to shifting trade landscapes while protecting their core competitive advantages and profit margins.

2️⃣ AI-driven demand reshaping semiconductor investment priorities

The semiconductor industry is experiencing a significant growth trajectory, with total industry sales projected to reach $697 billion in 2025, largely propelled by AI applications 3.

AI chip demand alone is expected to exceed $150 billion in 2025, creating a powerful growth engine reshaping capital allocation across the industry 3.
