Chip wafer shortage could last until 2030: SK Group chairman
Chey Tae-won, SK Group chairman, said on the sidelines of Nvidia’s GTC in San Jose that the global chip wafer shortage will likely persist until 2030 as AI-driven demand outpaces supply.
He said SK Hynix is reviewing a potential US ADR listing to broaden its global investor base.
The chipmaker’s CEO may unveil plans to stabilise DRAM chip prices.
Chey added that the group is exploring alternative energy sources.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
SK Hynix profits climb as AI reshapes the memory market
- The memory shortage comes from factories shifting output, not only from the usual ups and downs in chip demand 1.
- Manufacturers are moving capacity from consumer Dynamic Random-Access Memory (DRAM) to higher-margin High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) for AI accelerators. Nvidia’s Blackwell ships with 192 gigabytes of memory, about six times what a powerful modern PC would need 2.
- That shift lifted SK Hynix results. Operating profit more than doubled in 2025 as AI-memory shortages raised prices, and HBM revenue also more than doubled 3.
- SK Hynix is considering a U.S. listing of treasury shares through American Depositary Receipts (ADRs). The move could narrow the valuation difference with Micron Technology, its U.S.-listed memory rival 4.
The AI boom pushes up costs for everyday devices
- Demand for high-performance memory for AI is taking supply away from consumer electronics. One analysis describes the tradeoff as a zero-sum game 1.
- The PC market faces pressure as AI PCs expand. IDC, a market research firm, defines an AI PC as any PC with a neural processing unit (NPU), a dedicated chip for AI tasks. Microsoft’s Copilot+ PCs call for at least 16GB of RAM, which adds strain amid tight supply and rising prices 1.
- PC makers are warning of price increases up to 20%. IDC also expects the global smartphone market could shrink 5.2% in its pessimistic downside scenario as memory costs climb 1.
- Large vendors benefit from stronger bargaining power and deeper stockpiles. Smaller brands plus DIY or custom system builders face more exposure to shortages and price swings 1.
