Chip demand lifts S Korea consumer confidence to 3-month high
South Korea’s consumer confidence rose in February to its highest level since November, reaching 112.1, according to the Bank of Korea.
The increase was driven by improved assessments of current economic conditions and optimistic expectations, supported by strong semiconductor shipments and a rising stock market.
The Kospi index has more than doubled over the past year, helped by gains in Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.
However, housing sentiment declined, with expectations for home prices dropping to 108, the lowest since last April, following government measures to curb speculation and the expiration of tax reliefs.
Analysts suggest that the divergence between overall confidence and housing outlooks may reduce financial stability concerns, as cooler property expectations could limit household borrowing.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The AI boom is lifting Korea’s economy
- In the first 20 days of February, semiconductor exports climbed 134% year-on-year, driven by investment in artificial intelligence and data centres 1.
- Forecasts project South Korea’s 2026 semiconductor exports will reach a record US$188 billion, an 11% annual increase 2.
- Stock gains cluster in Samsung Electronics and SK hynix. Together they hold about a 70% share of the global DRAM (dynamic random-access memory) market 2. The Bank of Korea ties chip strength to improving growth expectations 3.
Korea’s two-speed recovery is a preview for the global economy
- The Bank of Korea calls the recovery “K-shaped”. IT stays strong while non-IT sectors lag, and housing sentiment remains weak 3.
- Early February trade figures underline the gap. Semiconductor exports rose 134% while auto exports fell almost 27% 4.
- The split complicates policy choices. The central bank held interest rates steady amid exchange-rate volatility, while the government extended support to low-credit self-employed people and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) 3.
- This kind of concentration can spread globally. AI demand can funnel growth into a narrow supply chain and leave other sectors behind.
