Chinese toy maker Pop Mart joins Hang Seng Index with JD Logistics

Pop Mart International Group, JD Logistics, and China Telecom have been added to the Hang Seng Index following the benchmark’s quarterly review.

The move raises the number of index members from 85 to 88, with the changes set to take effect on September 8.

Pop Mart, a Chinese toy maker, will also join the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index, while J&T Global Express will be removed from that list.

The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index will maintain 50 constituents despite these changes.

Index reviews are watched by investors for signals on company performance and can impact fund flows into the affected stocks.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Index inclusion creates measurable stock price momentum beyond passive fund flows

Pop Mart’s 250% stock surge this year demonstrates the anticipation effect that occurs before major index inclusion announcements1.

Research shows that companies added to major indices like the Russell 2000 experience significant price increases compared to those that narrowly miss inclusion, but these gains aren’t solely from index fund buying2.

The price movement often reflects improved earnings forecasts and heightened investor attention that accompanies inclusion consideration2.

Pop Mart’s case illustrates this pattern—analysts had widely predicted its inclusion based on strong market capitalization and trading volume metrics, creating momentum well before the official September 8 addition date1.

The company’s inclusion also brings increased trading volume, which typically follows index additions as both institutional and retail investors adjust their positions2.

2️⃣ Consumer discretionary companies are reshaping Hong Kong’s benchmark index

Pop Mart’s inclusion alongside JD Logistics and China Telecom signals how the Hang Seng Index is evolving to capture mainland China’s consumer economy transformation1.

The addition of a collectible toy maker to Hong Kong’s premier stock benchmark reflects the growing importance of consumer discretionary spending among Chinese investors1.
