Chinese tech firms name Gen Z leaders to head AI, robotics research
Chinese tech firms, including Tencent and AgiBot, are appointing millennial and Gen Z scientists as chief scientists to lead AI and robotics research.
Vinces Yao Shunyu, 28, a former OpenAI researcher, joined Tencent in December as chief AI scientist, focusing on fundamental research and strategic planning.
Yao, a Princeton and Tsinghua graduate, was involved in developing AI agents at OpenAI and published a paper emphasizing “context learning” for future AI models.
Tencent also retains Zhang Zhengyou, a computer vision expert with 20 years of experience at Google, who received the Helmholtz Prize in 2013.
PrimeBot, a robotics subsidiary of Shanghai-listed Swancor and controlled by AgiBot, appointed Peking University professor Dong Hao as chief scientist in January.
AgiBot’s chief scientist, Luo Jianlan, 33, previously worked at Google X and DeepMind, collaborating with AI researcher Sergey Levine.
Experts say the role of chief scientist involves pioneering research and strategic planning, distinct from product development or commercialization.
