Chinese startup Z.ai, Alibaba Cloud to deploy new AI agent

Z.ai, a Beijing-based AI startup previously known as Zhipu, has launched a new general-purpose AI agent for mobile and desktop devices in partnership with Alibaba Cloud.

The AI agent is free and available on Android, iOS, and web platforms, according to Z.ai’s announcement on WeChat.

It can perform tasks such as booking hotels, ordering food, generating videos, and processing documents, with options for both personal and work-related functions.

Users can interact with the agent using natural language without switching between apps, and the system is powered by Z.ai’s proprietary AI models.

Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing unit of Alibaba Group Holding, is providing the platform for deployment.

Z.ai has reportedly raised over 10 billion yuan (US$1.4 billion) in funding and filed pre-IPO documents in April, aiming for a listing as early as 2026.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Chinese AI companies are racing to fill market gaps left by geopolitical tensions

Z.ai’s partnership with Alibaba Cloud demonstrates how domestic Chinese tech firms are capitalizing on opportunities created when international competitors exit the market.

The initiative specifically takes advantage of “the void left by the start-up behind Manus AI, which has relocated to Singapore amid geopolitical tensions”1.

This reflects a broader strategic positioning where Chinese AI companies are accelerating their market presence when foreign competitors face regulatory or political pressures to relocate operations.

Z.ai’s status as one of China’s four “AI tigers” positions it well to capture market share in the nascent AI agent segment, especially when combined with Alibaba Cloud’s distribution infrastructure1.

The timing suggests Chinese companies are viewing geopolitical disruptions not just as challenges but as market opportunities to establish stronger domestic positions.

2️⃣ Free AI agents signal a land-grab strategy in the emerging market

Z.ai’s decision to offer its comprehensive AI agent for free across all major platforms indicates companies are prioritizing user acquisition over immediate revenue.
