Chinese solid-state battery maker Qingtao files for HK IPO

Qingtao (Kunshan) Energy Development Group, a Chinese solid-state battery maker, has filed for a Hong Kong listing on April 8.

It joins Beijing WeLion New Energy and US-based Factorial Energy in moving toward public listings as interest in more energy-efficient battery technology rises.

Solid-state batteries use solid rather than liquid electrolytes, which can reduce fire risk and offer higher energy density and longer driving range than conventional lithium-ion batteries.

Large-scale commercialization remains limited by high costs and technical challenges.

Qingtao said in its prospectus, citing Frost & Sullivan, that it was the world’s largest producer of solid-liquid hybrid and all-solid-state batteries by shipment volume in 2025.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Qingtao’s lead comes from getting hybrid batteries into the market early

  • Qingtao’s leadership claim rests on an early move into the more established solid-liquid hybrid battery segment.
  • Frost & Sullivan put the company’s 2025 global market share at 33.6% for combined solid-liquid hybrid and all-solid-state battery shipments 1.
  • By March 30, 2026, Qingtao had delivered more than 10,000 solid-liquid hybrid battery packs and set up one of the earliest mass-production lines for solid-liquid hybrid energy storage batteries in 2018 1.
  • In 2025, revenue rose 132.84% year on year to RMB 943 million (US$137.8 million), with deployments in more than 30 vehicle models including IM Motors, an electric-vehicle brand backed by SAIC Motor 1.

Solid-state battery IPO momentum tracks policy backing, supply-chain progress, and wider use cases

  • Qingtao and peers are moving toward public listings as Chinese government policies aim to move solid-state batteries from lab work into factory output 2.
  • Supply-chain growth is lowering input costs. Prices for sulfide electrolytes, a battery material that helps move ions inside the battery, fell in 2025 and are expected to drop further in 2026 2.
  • Commercial traction is building outside electric vehicles, with energy storage systems and consumer electronics providing earlier proof points.
  • Qingtao is the only battery supplier for a solid-liquid hybrid battery energy storage power station in Wuhai, Inner Mongolia, with 800 megawatt-hours (MWh) installed. Sunwoda has mass-produced more than 10 million semi-solid-state batteries for consumer electronics 1.
  • Industry forecasts place an all-solid-state commercialization inflection point after 2030, with hybrid approaches carrying the market until then 3.
