Chinese self driving firm Momenta said to file for $1b HK IPO

Momenta, a Beijing autonomous driving startup backed by General Motors Co. and Tencent Holdings Ltd., has confidentially filed for an IPO in Hong Kong, people familiar with the matter said.

The company is working with China International Capital Corp. and Deutsche Bank AG and has been meeting investors to gauge interest.

Momenta may seek to raise at least US$1 billion, though deliberations are ongoing and no final decision has been made.

Momenta earlier filed confidentially for a US IPO in 2024 with China International Capital Corp., Goldman Sachs Group Inc., and UBS Group AG, but that application lapsed.

General Motors announced a US$300 million investment in 2021, and Momenta was valued at over US$5 billion in a funding round last year.

Other backers include Mercedes-Benz Group AG, SAIC Motor Corp., Toyota Motor Corp., Temasek Holdings Pte, and Yunfeng Capital.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Momenta’s dual-track strategy supports its IPO case

  • Some US rivals have leaned hard into robo-taxis. Momenta instead runs a “dual-track” plan that keeps its long-term robo-taxi goal while selling products today 1.
  • Revenue comes from mass-produced advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) (software and sensors that help with tasks like lane-keeping and adaptive cruise control) sold to automakers including Mercedes-Benz Group AG and Toyota Motor Corp. More than 400,000 production vehicles carry Momenta’s intelligent driving systems, according to Valeo 2.
  • Momenta is not profitable yet. The ADAS business offers a nearer revenue path than a pure robo-taxi bet, and it may shape how the company talks to investors 1.

Momenta’s IPO planning tracks Hong Kong’s draw for Chinese tech listings

  • Momenta has weighed a Hong Kong listing rather than a US one as US-China tensions run high. The company says it has not made a final decision on IPO plans, including venue 3.
  • Interest in Hong Kong IPOs has picked up. Global funds such as BlackRock and Temasek Holdings Pte have returned to cornerstone books, which marks a shift in mood 4.
  • If Momenta pulls off a strong offering, it could serve as a bellwether for confidence in China’s high-tech sector amid trade restrictions 1.
  • It could also spotlight a newer wave of Chinese firms that, like battery giant CATL, have become primary providers of technologies for smart electric vehicles and are reshaping car development 3.
