Chinese robotics startup Robotera raises $148m

Beijing-based Robotera, a Tsinghua University-backed robotics startup that develops humanoid robots, service robots, and dexterous robotic hands, completed a 1 billion yuan (US$148 million) funding round on July 6.

State-backed Chengtong Fund led the round, as Chinese humanoid and embodied AI companies race to scale research and commercial use.

Other investors included Jiangxi State-owned Capital Operation Holding Group, Guoyuan Equity, Yufu Zhongxin Fund, and Hangzhou Capital.

Returning investors included CICC Renault, Jiukun Venture Capital, Hony Capital, Juntai Capital, and Shenghe Capital.

Existing shareholders Houxue Capital, Tsingkong Tiancheng, and Qianshan Capital also increased their investments.

The deal brings Robotera’s fundraising over the past two months to 2.5 billion yuan (US$369 million), following a 1 billion yuan (US$148 million) strategic round in March and a US$200 million round in April.

Founder Chen Jianyu also runs Tsinghua University’s Intelligent Systems and Robotics Laboratory.

The funding comes amid broader state support for humanoid robotics in China, including a venture capital mechanism expected to attract 1 trillion yuan (US$148 billion) over 20 years.

Meanwhile, Unitree is preparing a 4.2 billion yuan (US$620 million) initial public offering.
