Chinese robotics startup EngineAI targets $1b valuation
EngineAI, a Shenzhen-based robotics startup founded in 2023, plans to raise 1 billion yuan (US$139 million) in funding during Q4 2025. The company aims for a US$1 billion valuation to further develop humanoid robots.
This year, EngineAI gained attention for showcasing a robot capable of performing a frontflip.
It expects to ship nearly 1,000 robots in 2025 and targets 10,000 units by 2028, according to co-founder Ren Guowen.
Ren noted the company aims to introduce robots into households and cited China’s extensive supply chain as an advantage, even without international partnerships.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ China’s demographic crisis accelerates robotics investment
EngineAI’s billion-dollar valuation ambitions reflect a broader trend driven by China’s shrinking workforce and rising labor costs.
China’s working-age population continues to decline, with demographic data showing a decrease of 4.9 million people in a single year 1.
This workforce shortage coincides with rising wages, which increased to RMB 3,072 ($473) for migrant workers, pushing manufacturers toward automation solutions 1.
The urgency is reflected in China’s robot installations, which now account for 51% of global deployments, making it the world’s largest robotics market by a significant margin 2.
For startups like EngineAI, this demographic challenge creates market opportunities as businesses seek to maintain productivity despite labor constraints.
This explains why humanoid robots are moving beyond novelty applications to address genuine economic needs, particularly in manufacturing where China dominates global production.
2️⃣ China’s comprehensive policy support creates fertile ground for robotics startups
EngineAI benefits from China’s strategic prioritization of robotics through national initiatives and substantial government backing.
The “Made in China 2025” initiative specifically targets robotics as a key sector for development, with the goal of enhancing self-sufficiency and reducing reliance on foreign technology 3.
