Chinese robotics firm Unitree opens new factory in Hangzhou

Chinese robotics firm Unitree Robotics has opened a new factory in Hangzhou to meet increasing demand for humanoid robots in the domestic market.

The facility covers 10,000 square meters and is located 15 minutes from the company’s headquarters in Zhejiang province.

According to Unitree, the factory will support its growth plans over the next three to five years.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ China’s strategic push for global leadership in humanoid robotics

Unitree’s factory expansion is part of a broader national strategy to dominate the emerging humanoid robot market.

China aims to produce half of all global humanoid robots by 2025, with six manufacturers set to exceed 1,000 units produced next year, creating a projected domestic output value of $616 million 1.

The government’s direct involvement in Unitree’s factory location demonstrates how China is replicating its successful EV industry playbook, using coordinated policy support to rapidly scale manufacturing capabilities in emerging technologies 2.

This push comes as U.S. robotics companies, including Tesla and Boston Dynamics, are urging their government to develop a national robotics strategy to counter China’s growing competitive advantage 3.

While the technology is still maturing, as seen in recent humanoid robot races where the fastest robot finished in 2 hours and 40 minutes versus the human record of 56:42, China’s focus on mass production aims to accelerate development through manufacturing scale 4.

2️⃣ Vertical integration emerges as competitive advantage in robotics manufacturing

Unitree’s approach of developing core components in-house rather than relying on external suppliers mirrors a critical advantage that has helped other successful hardware companies maintain quality control and cost advantages.

The company’s supply chain model allows it to offer humanoid robots at $16,000, establishing a competitive price point in a market where accessibility has traditionally been limited to research institutions with substantial budgets 5.

This vertical integration is particularly significant as the global humanoid robot market is projected to reach $4.04 billion by 2030, growing at a 17.5% CAGR, creating pressure for manufacturers to establish sustainable production models 6.

Manufacturing efficiency will likely determine market leaders, as Chinese firms leverage their production capabilities to drive down costs and increase production efficiency, similar to how they’ve come to dominate the industrial robot sector, which is expected to reach 649,000 units in China alone by 2030 7.
