Chinese robotaxi firm Pony.ai founders commit to 540-day lock-up
Pony.ai’s co-founders have extended their lock-up periods for an additional 540 days, the company announced. This decision, effective May 25, 2025, affects CEO James Peng and CTO Tiancheng Lou, who collectively own about 22.9% of the company’s shares.
The extended lock-up includes more than 81 million Class B shares and 110,828 Class A shares. These shares will remain restricted until late 2026. This decision coincides with Pony.ai’s plans to increase production and deployment of its Robotaxi services.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Long-term founder commitment stands out amid the autonomous vehicle sector’s consolidation phase
Pony.ai’s co-founders extending their lock-up period by 540 days signals confidence during a period of industry volatility and consolidation.
The autonomous vehicle sector reached a significant turning point in 2023, with McKinsey noting that some companies successfully scaled operations while others faced major setbacks or shuttered entirely 1.
This extension is particularly notable because the industry requires substantial capital investment, with McKinsey estimating over $5 billion is needed to develop Level 4/5 robotaxis 1.
By voluntarily restricting their ability to sell shares until late 2026, Pony.ai’s founders are demonstrating commitment during what industry analysts describe as a transition from prototyping to commercial operation in the robotaxi market 2.
The move contrasts with the broader industry reality where many autonomous vehicle startups have struggled with technological challenges and regulatory hurdles, leading to diminished overall excitement in the sector 3.
2️⃣ Strategic positioning in a projected $400 billion market with few expected winners
Pony.ai’s founders are positioning for long-term growth in what Technology Magazine projects will be a $400 billion autonomous vehicle market by 2035 4.
The company has established itself among the top autonomous vehicle developers globally, notably forming a strategic joint venture with Toyota focused on advancing the mass production of robotaxis 4.
This comes as industry experts predict the North American autonomous vehicle market will remain fragmented with only a small number of companies likely to dominate 1.
Pony.ai must navigate a competitive landscape that includes well-established players like Waymo, which has logged over 20 million real-world autonomous miles, and Cruise, which has surpassed 10 million driverless miles 5.
The lock-up extension aligns with the long development timelines in the industry, where despite advancements, full deployment of autonomous vehicles is projected to take several more years beyond pilot programs in select cities 6.
