Chinese lidar maker Hesai posts $36m net profit in Q3

Hesai Group, a Shanghai-based maker of automotive lidar sensors, reported a net profit of 256.2 million yuan (US$36 million) for Q3 2025, reversing a net loss of 70.4 million yuan (US$9.9 million) a year earlier.

Revenue rose 47.5% year-on-year to 795.4 million yuan (US$111.7 million).

Hesai supplies lidar sensors—devices that use lasers to measure distances—to carmakers including Li Auto and Geely, and is preparing for future adoption of level 3 (L3) self-driving features in China.

China has not yet legalized L3 autonomous driving, but carmakers are developing vehicles with this technology.

CFO Andrew Fan said demand for advanced sensors remains high as Chinese automakers increase investment in autonomous vehicles.

The company raised its 2025 profit forecast to between 350 million and 450 million yuan (US$49.2 million and US$63.2 million).

Hesai also plans to open a factory in Thailand by late 2026 or early 2027 to supply international clients.

Research firm Yole Group estimated Hesai’s global automotive lidar market share at 33% in 2024.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Hesai profit hinges on volume while margins slip and concentration risk rises

  • Hesai had Q3 net income of RMB (Chinese yuan) 256 million 1. Equity investment gains were RMB 148 million (non-operating gains from stakes in other companies) 1, so net income excluding these gains was RMB 108 million.
  • Lidar shipments rose 229% to 441,398 units 2. Gross margin fell from 47.7% to 42.1% 2 due to a shift toward lower-priced ATX units (Hesai’s entry-range lidar) at around US$200 and less engineering services revenue 1.
  • Q4 guidance puts ATX at 80% of shipments 1. Volume-based discounts to Chinese automakers 1 imply a lower average selling price, even as multi-lidar use lifts value per vehicle.
  • ADAS customers include Li Auto and Xiaomi (entering autos) 1. BYD and Leapmotor (Chinese EV maker) are buyers 1. Zeekr (Geely’s premium EV brand) and Great Wall Motor are buyers too 1. SOPs for Geely and Chery are pending 1, raising exposure if these original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) slow adoption or switch sensors.

Vendors eye China’s L3 rules

  • China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) introduced conditional approval for L3 vehicle production in 2025 3. National access standards for L3+ vehicles are not set yet 4, which creates demand for help with city pilot rules.
  • New mandatory combined driving assistance standards 5 require tests across tough scenarios including static obstacles, tunnels, and dynamic cut-ins. Automakers will outsource more validation.
  • Vendors offering cybersecurity graded protection systems (tiered security levels mandated by regulators), real-time monitoring, and secure over-the-air (OTA) updates help automakers meet mandates before L3 rollout 4.
  • Simulation and testing providers can target robotaxis (self-driving ride-hailing). Pony.ai (autonomous driving startup), Didi (China’s ride-hailing platform), and Baidu Apollo (Baidu’s autonomous driving unit) need multi-year validation deals to scale fleets in pilot cities 14.
