Chinese household robot set for home tests in 2027
GigaAI, a robotics startup in China, has unveiled what it said is the country’s first general-purpose household humanoid robot, the SeeLight S1.
The company plans to test it in Wuhan homes in the first half of 2027.
In a company video, the wheeled robot chopped vegetables, fried eggs, loaded a washing machine, hung laundry, made a bed, and opened curtains, while a 100-unit trial is set to begin in staff housing for tech workers later in May.
The Wuhan pilot will focus on homes with elderly people, children, or pets, and the company wants to cut the hardware price to below 100,000 yuan, or about US$14,700, by June 2027, said CEO Zhu Zheng.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Two startups share the Giga AI name
- This Giga AI is separate from a San Francisco startup with the same name that builds voice AI for customer support rather than robotics 1.
- That San Francisco company makes voice-based AI agents for support teams and counts DoorDash and Postman among its customers 1.
- It raised a US$61 million series A led by Redpoint Ventures after a US$3.6 million seed round led by Nexus Venture Partners for software that lets companies run large language models (LLMs), the AI systems behind tools like ChatGPT, on their own servers 12.
- The business first aimed to fine-tune LLMs for enterprises, then moved into customer support after customer talks 3.
Brand mix-ups in a crowded AI market
- Shared names are more common as AI companies launch at speed around the world.
- The San Francisco firm’s move from LLM fine-tuning to support software captures how fast AI startups adjust when they search for a business model 3.
- That overlap can complicate fundraising and marketing because each company must spell out its product and market more clearly.
- For investors and enterprise buyers, the mix-up adds to the need for careful due diligence, especially in regulated sectors like finance and healthcare where the San Francisco company plans to expand 1.
