Chinese firm buys ByteDance stake at $480b valuation: sources

Capital Today, a Chinese investment firm, has acquired a block of ByteDance shares at a valuation of about US$480 billion, significantly above recent levels, according to Bloomberg.

ByteDance, based in Beijing, is the parent company of TikTok and other major digital platforms.

The auction for the shares, previously held by Bank of China Group Investment, drew up to seven bidders, with Capital Today ultimately paying around US$300 million for the stake, sources familiar with the deal said.

Previous transactions valued ByteDance at US$330 billion during its employee share buyback in September, while some institutional investors have marked their holdings closer to US$400 billion earlier this year.

The sale marks one of the largest secondary trades in ByteDance shares this year, and highlights continued investor interest amid ongoing discussions about TikTok’s US ownership.

ByteDance’s potential deal with US investors would see it retain about half the profit from its US operations, according to Bloomberg News.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

ByteDance’s $480B valuation equals about 3x 2024 revenue, but thin margin data muddies the price

  • ByteDance posted $156 billion in 2024 revenue, up 29% 1. Bloomberg says TikTok drove growth while China slowed 2. A $480 billion price equals about 3x sales, which only works if margins hold and growth stays above 20% 2.
  • ByteDance withholds operating profit and a split between Douyin and TikTok. The secondary price is hard to read and might bake in hopes of a US ownership fix 2. Prior marks of $330 billion for an employee buyback and $400 billion put Capital Today about 20 to 45% higher 23. The split would reveal whether the bet leans on TikTok’s US path or Douyin’s monetization depth.

E‑commerce vendors should pursue TikTok Shop partner slots as a US deal could speed seller sign-ups

  • If ByteDance keeps half of TikTok’s US profits 2, it will lean on TikTok Shop and ads. The marketplace already works with agencies, talent networks, and service firms that aid sellers or creators 4. That sets up chances for payments, logistics, and Software as a Service (SaaS) tools.
  • Partners get leads, rewards, and training 4. They also receive custom services with one‑to‑one support for top performers 4. Case studies cite TT Media lifting a boutique by 435% in three months, and TikMarketing hitting $2.6 million a month for clients 4.
