Chinese eyewear tech startup focuses on simple AR glasses

Shenzhen-based startup Even Realities, founded in 2023, challenges the trend of feature-rich augmented reality eyewear by focusing on simplicity and practicality.

Their flagship product, the Even G1, emphasizes a lightweight design and essential functions, without cameras or built-in audio to prioritize privacy and comfort.

Instead, it integrates digital displays into regular eyewear to provide notifications, translations, and speech prompts without obstructing vision.

Even Realities has quickly gained traction, completing three funding rounds within 18 months and positioning itself as a key player in China’s smart glasses market.

The company targets international consumers through direct sales rather than crowdfunding platforms.

CEO Will Wang explained the focus on core functionality, noting cameras raise privacy concerns and users often prefer separate audio devices.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Learning from Google Glass’s iconic failure

Even Realities’ decision to exclude cameras from their smart glasses directly addresses a core reason behind the failure of Google Glass over a decade ago.

When Google Glass launched in 2013, it faced significant backlash due to privacy concerns related to its built-in camera, with many venues banning the device to protect patrons from being recorded without consent 1.

This privacy issue was compounded by Google’s unclear messaging about the product’s benefits and applications, leaving consumers uncertain about why they needed the $1,500 device in the first place 2.

Even’s CEO Wang acknowledges these lessons, noting that “cameras significantly infringe on user privacy,” particularly for professional users—a deliberate design choice that reflects an understanding of the market’s historical pitfalls.

The company’s focus on “clear visual information and privacy” represents a targeted solution to problems that plagued earlier smart glasses, showing that innovation sometimes requires strategic limitation rather than feature maximalism.

2️⃣ The maturing smart glasses market now rewards specialization

Even Realities’ minimalist strategy reflects a broader industry evolution from all-in-one prototypes toward specialized devices with clear use cases.
