Chinese EV maker BYD leads Hong Kong market with 27% share
BYD emerged as the leading electric vehicle (EV) brand in Hong Kong during the first half of 2025, with 4,902 private EV registrations, according to data from the city’s Transport Department. This figure represents 27% of the total 18,356 private EV registrations in the same period.
The company’s Sealion 07, a mid-size five-seat SUV launched in late 2024, was its top-selling model, with 3,676 units sold.
Tesla followed closely with 3,889 registrations, while Geely-owned Zeekr, Toyota, and Xpeng were also among the top six brands.
Together, these six brands accounted for 66% of all EV registrations in Hong Kong.
In contrast, Tesla led the market in 2024 with 9,556 new registrations, nearly double that of BYD.
However, Chinese EV manufacturers, including BYD, are increasingly gaining market share in Hong Kong. They face challenges entering markets like the U.S. and the EU while competing aggressively in their domestic market.
