Chinese ecommerce app DHGate hits top of US app store

The Chinese ecommerce app DHGate has reached the number 3 spot on the United States App Store’s free iPhone apps chart as of April 14, 2025.

This surge follows viral videos from Chinese manufacturers discussing the global luxury goods supply chain.

Data from app intelligence firm Appfigures shows that DHGate was ranked number 352 among non-game free iPhone apps in the US on April 11, 2025.

It climbed to number 6 by April 13 and reached no. 3 the following day.

On April 12, 2025 the app recorded 35,400 downloads across the App Store and Google Play, marking a 56% increase from its 30-day average.

US users accounted for 17,300 of those downloads, a 98% rise.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Tariffs have historically backfired as economic policy

The current tariff escalation follows a well-documented pattern of protectionist policies that have repeatedly proven counterproductive throughout U.S. history.

The Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930, which raised duties on over 20,000 imported goods, triggered retaliatory measures from trading partners that deepened the Great Depression rather than protecting American industries1.

This mirrors the current situation where the 145% tariff increase on Chinese imports has sparked unexpected consumer responses rather than reshoring manufacturing.

The IMF previously estimated that U.S.-China trade tensions could reduce global GDP by 0.5%, highlighting how tariffs create broad economic ripple effects beyond their intended targets2.

What we’re witnessing with DHgate’s surge is consumers seeking alternative channels rather than accepting higher prices—a predictable market response that policymakers often underestimate.

2️⃣ Social media is radically transforming supply chain transparency

TikTok’s role in this trade dispute represents a fundamental shift in how consumers learn about global manufacturing realities that were previously industry knowledge.
