Chinese CPU designer Loongson ships one million chips
Loongson Technology, a Chinese CPU designer, has shipped more than 1 million units of its 3A6000 desktop processor since its November 2023 launch.
This marked a milestone in China’s push to build a domestic chip industry and expand the use of homegrown CPUs.
The 3A6000 uses Loongson’s LoongArch instruction set, in-house IP cores, and a domestic supply chain.
It has been adopted in China’s government-backed XinChuang IT replacement program.
Loongson said the chip’s performance is roughly comparable to Intel desktop processors from around 2020.
Beijing steps up efforts to reduce reliance on foreign semiconductor technology after US export controls tightened access to advanced chips, design software, and foundry services.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The 3A6000 lands near 2020 Intel desktop speed, with a newer core than that result suggests
- Overall speed is close to a 2020 Intel Core i3, though the chip design is more advanced than that comparison suggests 1.
- It has four cores, eight threads, and clocks up to 2.5 GHz. Detailed testing puts single-thread results near AMD’s 2017-era Zen 1 architecture, an older CPU design from Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) 2.
- Its core includes a branch predictor, which guesses the next instruction, on a level close to AMD’s Zen 2. Its reordering capacity, which helps juggle instructions, is closer to Zen 3 2.
- Low clock speed holds it back. Real-world Dynamic Random-Access Memory (DRAM) results are middling despite a better controller than the prior chip, and dual-channel DDR4-2666 read bandwidth was about level with a 2015 Intel Core i5-6600K 2.
- Mainstream operating system support is limited. Users must rely on open-source software built for the chip, and some programs run very slowly or fail to run 3.
A parallel tech ecosystem that is good enough
- The 3A6000 is aimed mainly at China’s government-backed XinChuang IT replacement program. That policy replaces foreign information technology with domestic options in government and other sensitive sectors 4.
- Its performance trails current chips by years, yet it is enough for everyday work. It can handle jobs such as editing 4K video, though software support still limits what it can do 3.
- That level of performance fits government offices and other roles that do not need top-end speed. In those settings, self-reliance carries more weight than raw power.
- A mini PC with the chip sells for 2,799 yuan (US$387). That suggests sales now reach beyond government channels and into a small retail niche 1.
- Loongson may also sell these CPUs in Russia and Belarus, which face EU and US sanctions. That could give some sanctioned markets a non-Western option 1.
