Chinese chipmaker YMTC eyes Shanghai listing

Yangtze Memory Technologies Co, a Wuhan-based flash memory chipmaker, has started preparations for an IPO on Shanghai’s STAR Market.

The listing could become one of China’s largest semiconductor IPOs.

The filing shows YMTC has no controlling shareholder, with state-backed Hubei Changsheng Development holding 26.54%.

Other investors include the National Integrated Circuit Industry Investment Fund and local state capital funds.

YMTC said in the filing, citing third-party research, that it held about 13% of the global NAND flash market by the third quarter of 2025.

Its first-quarter revenue topped 20 billion yuan (US$2.94 billion), up twofold from a year earlier.

Guosheng Securities estimated the IPO could value YMTC at about 300 billion yuan, or roughly US$44 billion.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Innovation helps drive YMTC’s rise

  • YMTC has won buyers at home, with products topping Samsung on JD.com, one of China’s largest ecommerce platforms 1.
  • That momentum comes partly from fast product work. YMTC’s 232-layer Xtacking3.0 SSD was the first 200-plus-layer solution found on the open market, said TechInsights, a semiconductor research firm 2.
  • Its latest consumer SSDs can use 294-layer NAND. A teardown found storage density above 20 Gb/mm², which puts the technology alongside top Micron and Samsung products 1.
  • Its Xtacking design helps make that possible. It uses hybrid bonding to join a NAND wafer with a wafer that carries peripheral logic circuitry, the control electronics around the memory cells, in what TechInsights called the first use of the approach in memory devices 2.

YMTC’s IPO push may sharpen memory market competition

  • A YMTC IPO, along with a possible listing by DRAM maker CXMT, suggests China’s memory chipmakers are moving faster into public markets 3.
  • More supply from a better-funded YMTC could squeeze margins in the cyclical NAND business, especially in mainstream consumer products where it has sold well in China 1.
  • The company is moving into enterprise gear too, with a PCIe 5.0 SSD set for release in 2025 1.
  • The push also deepens the tech contest with the US and nudges YMTC to localize its supply chain. One estimate put more than 14% of its production equipment in the hands of domestic vendors 1.
