Chinese chip startup Dishan advances AI GPU prototype
Dishan Technology, a Shanghai-based chip startup, is verifying a prototype of its first 2nm AI GPU as China pushes to build more domestic high-end AI chips.
The chip uses a hybrid FinFET and gate-all-around process with a chiplet design. It is expected to improve energy efficiency by 40% compared with its predecessor.
Dishan will improve supporting toolchains such as CUDA-compatible compilers to align with Nvidia’s software ecosystem. The chip has not yet reached tapeout and may take one to two more years to enter mass production and commercial use.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Dishan’s breakthrough is part of a rapid investment race
- Demand for domestically made GPUs has pulled in fast funding, with some Chinese AI chip companies closing two rounds in three months 1.
- Backers range from venture capital firm Matrix Partners to regional state-linked investor Henan Science and Technology 1.
- Dishan’s milestone sits within a wider national push, where many startups branded “Chinese Nvidias” chase the same pool of capital 1.
Technical progress and funding can hide a brutal market for China’s GPU startups
- Dishan is still verifying a prototype for its 2-nanometer-class AI graphics processing unit (GPU), while other Shanghai-based GPU companies have run into serious cash strain 2.
- TrendForce, a market research firm, reported that GPU company Lisuan Technology raised about 328 million yuan (US$46 million) to avoid bankruptcy 3.
- The crunch came after Lisuan’s 2022 pre-A round worth “hundreds of millions of CNY,” the abbreviation for Chinese yuan 4.
- The sector demands heavy spending upfront, so early checks and engineering progress still may not lead to a product that survives commercially 3.
