Chinese chip firm SemiDrive to supply EU carmaker in 2026

SemiDrive, a Chinese automotive chipmaker, has announced plans to supply its cockpit system-on-a-chip (SoC) to an unnamed European car manufacturer starting late next year.

The chips will be integrated into various models, including sedans and SUVs, sold in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

The vehicles are expected to feature SemiDrive’s X9 SoC, which includes CPUs, GPUs, AI accelerators, and video processors for advanced cockpit applications.

This collaboration marks SemiDrive’s first partnership with a foreign original equipment manufacturer (OEM) for mass-produced vehicles outside China, according to general manager Eugene Wang.

Founded in 2018 and based in Nanjing, SemiDrive specializes in automotive-grade chips for smart cockpits and microcontroller units (MCUs).

Since 2021, the company has supplied over 8 million chips for more than 100 vehicle models, primarily for Chinese automakers. Fewer than 10% of these chips have been used in export-bound vehicles, making the European partnership a milestone in SemiDrive’s global ambitions.

The company has raised funding from investors including SAIC Motor, Sequoia Capital, Walden International, and Matrix Partners.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ China’s auto chip self-sufficiency push creates new global competitors

SemiDrive’s European expansion represents a milestone in China’s broader semiconductor strategy, which aims to increase domestic auto chip sourcing from 10% currently to 20-25% by 2025 1.

This national priority has been accelerated by geopolitical tensions, with China investing over $100 billion to develop domestic semiconductor capabilities and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers 2.

Despite Qualcomm’s 32% dominance of China’s smart cockpit SoC market (compared to SemiDrive’s 3.5%), Chinese firms are gaining momentum through government backing and competitive pricing. SemiDrive specifically aims to undercut foreign competitors by 10-20% 3.

The global automotive-grade smart cockpit SoC market is projected to grow from $3.14 billion in 2024 to $5.75 billion by 2029, creating significant opportunities for emerging players like SemiDrive to establish themselves internationally 4.

China’s strategy reflects the semiconductor development paths taken by Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan, focusing on establishing footholds in specific market segments before expanding broader capabilities.

2️⃣ European market entry signals shifting global automotive supply chains
