Chinese carmakers captured a record 9.8% of Europe’s hybrid vehicle sales in August, according to Dataforce.

The figure marks the fourth new high this year for Chinese brands in the hybrid segment.

Their share of Europe’s EV market was 9.6% in August, slightly down from July.

BYD, SAIC Motor’s MG, and Leapmotor are among the Chinese manufacturers expanding in Europe with cheaper hybrid and electric models.

Battery-electric registrations rose 26%, and plug-in hybrid sales increased 28% across the EU, UK, and EFTA countries through August, the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association said.

BYD’s EV sales in Europe more than doubled year-on-year in August to 7,109, while MG’s dropped 16%, and Leapmotor’s reached 2,019, according to Jato Dynamics.

Chinese automakers have increased their focus on hybrids following new EU tariffs on China-made EVs, while also building local manufacturing capacity.
