Chinese car brands making fast entry into Europe’s EV market

Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers have gained a foothold in Norway, capturing around 10% of the market share since their entry in 2020.

Brands such as BYD, XPeng, and MG have used competitive pricing and advanced technology to establish a presence in the Nordic country.

Norway, recognized as one of the most EV-friendly nations globally, does not impose tariffs on Chinese EV imports.

This policy contrasts with the United States and the European Union, which have implemented duties on Chinese-made EVs to protect domestic manufacturers. .

Tesla remains the leading EV brand in Norway, with strong sales driven by its Model Y SUV.

However, other Chinese brands have entered the ranks of the top 20 best-selling companies in Norway, according to data from the Norwegian Road Federation.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Norway’s comprehensive policy system created a uniquely fertile ground for EV adoption

Norway’s EV success stems from a systematic, multi-decade policy approach rather than a single incentive, providing lessons for other markets.

The country implemented a complete ecosystem of policies beginning in the 1990s, including exemptions from 25% VAT, reduced tolls, and access to bus lanes that made EVs economically attractive to consumers 1.

This policy consistency has created extraordinary results with 88.9% of new passenger cars sold in 2024 being fully electric, compared to just 20% in the UK during the same period 2.

Norway’s infrastructure development has been equally impressive, with over 27,000 public charging points (more than 400 per 100,000 people), eliminating range anxiety as a barrier to adoption 2.

The absence of a domestic auto manufacturing industry has been crucial, allowing Norway to implement consumer-focused policies without facing resistance from local manufacturing interests that might otherwise protect combustion engine technologies 2.

2️⃣ Norway functions as Europe’s strategic EV laboratory and entry point

Norway has become the critical testing ground for new EV manufacturers looking to enter the broader European market, particularly for Chinese brands seeking Western expansion.
