Chinese brain interface startup Gestala raises $21.6m
Gestala, a Chinese startup developing non-invasive ultrasound brain-computer interfaces, has raised US$21.6 million two months after launch.
Founder and CEO Phoenix Peng said the round was co-led by Guosheng Capital and Dalton Venture and was oversubscribed with commitments above US$58 million.
He said the company was valued at US$100 million to US$200 million.
The company will use the funds for R&D, expand its workforce from about 15 to around 35 by year-end, and build a manufacturing facility in China.
Gestala aims to finish a first-generation prototype by year-end and is prioritising a chronic pain program while researching mental health, stroke rehabilitation, and other early-stage indications, with most research still at an early stage rather than in clinical trials.
Peng said ultrasound could provide non-invasive access to deep neural circuits and that hospital partnerships and manufacturing scale in China could speed trials and lower costs.
He estimated costs at roughly 20%-33% of comparable studies in the US and Europe.
🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The technology’s promise is grounded in established medical research
- Gestala’s work builds on low-intensity focused ultrasound (LIFU) techniques 1.
- Sound waves apply light mechanical forces that “push and pull” cell membranes, opening mechanically sensitive ion channels to start or quiet neural activity without harming tissue 2.
- Founder and CEO Phoenix Peng cited early clinical trials in chronic pain where one session cut pain scores 50%, with relief lasting one to two weeks 3.
- A 2025 review covering 28 studies found early evidence of antidepressant and anti-anxiety effects from LIFU, matching Gestala’s mental-health research plans 4.
- The first product will be a stationary benchtop device for clinics, while accurate brain-signal readout through the skull remains a long-term challenge, experts said 5.
China’s Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) strategy could de-risk the path from lab to market
- Gestala’s funding ties to a national push as China issued a roadmap in August 2025 that targets BCI milestones by 2027 and a full supply chain by 2030 6.
- Provinces including Sichuan, Hubei, and Zhejiang have set medical service prices for BCI 6. Peng said this could speed entry into the national medical insurance system 6.
- State support plus lower clinical trial costs may let firms like Gestala take a different route from U.S. rivals by scaling non-invasive care for common conditions such as pain or depression 3.
