Chinese biotech startup launches first home-grown imaging device

Shuimu BioSciences, a Beijing-based startup focused on advanced imaging devices for biomolecules, has developed China’s first cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) machine.

Cryo-EM captures detailed 3D images of proteins and other biomolecules and is widely used in drug discovery.

Shuimu received its first commercial order for the Totem cryo-EM machine this year from a Chinese university.

The Totem 300 model is priced between 35 million yuan (US$4.9 million) to 46.6 million yuan (US$6.5 million), with about half of its hardware sourced domestically.

Founded in 2017, Shuimu grew out of a partnership involving Tsinghua University, Beijing’s municipal government, and Thermo Fisher.

The company operates an AI computing platform called Smart, supported by ByteDance’s Volcano Engine, which is used with its devices.

Shuimu is currently raising new funding and aims for a Hong Kong IPO in 2027.
