Chinese-backed microchip maker said to weigh Stockholm IPO
Silex Microsystems, a Stockholm-based maker of micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), is exploring an initial public offering in Stockholm as early as 2025, according to sources familiar with the discussions.
The company, which recently transferred control from Chinese owner Sai Micro Electronics to Swedish investors including Bure Equity and Creades, is working with advisers on the potential listing.
Silex was valued at about 5.5 billion Swedish kroner (US$570 million) in a stake sale earlier this year, and sources said its IPO could target a higher valuation, possibly above US$1 billion.
Sai Micro Electronics still owns roughly 45% of Silex, with the remainder held by management and Swedish investors.
The company operates a MEMS foundry in Stockholm, producing sensors and actuators used in electronics and medical devices.
Silex reported revenues of 1.2 billion kroner (US$126 million) in 2024.
The IPO plans are in early stages and may change.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Valuation drivers for a $1B-plus IPO
- Silex posted SEK (Swedish krona) 1.2 billion in 2024 revenue with a 28% EBIT (Earnings Before Interest and Taxes) margin and 17% sales CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) since 2015 1.
- The company runs a pure-play micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) foundry model (a contract manufacturer that does not sell its own end products) 1. It avoids competing with customers while serving medical technology, cloud services, and autonomous driving.
- IPO checks are unclear 2, including whether a customer tops 20% of revenue, capex for the planned 300mm fab expansion, and margin durability as output scales.
- Ownership is shifting from Chinese to Swedish control pending regulatory approvals 1. Completion is expected in Q3 2025, which could overlap with an IPO in 2025.
Vendors and OSATs around Silex’s 300mm fab and Beijing 8-inch line
- Silex plans a 300mm fab in Järfälla (a municipality near Stockholm) 2 and runs an 8-inch MEMS line in Beijing with 10,000 wafers per month capacity 3. These sites open orders for plasma etchers, bonding systems, and metrology (measurement and inspection) tools.
- The Beijing facility replicates Silex’s Swedish manufacturing technology 3, creating room for tech transfer partnerships plus localization support from equipment vendors and factory automation specialists.
- Outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) providers can tap rising volume 3. Swedish capacity reached about 7,000 wafers per month in 2020. Design houses and fabless (design-only) sensor firms can pitch partnerships as Silex fills lines 2, with wafer-level complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS)-MEMS integration in view.
