Chinese automaker Geely sets up Europe R&D hub

Geely Auto Group has launched Geely Technology Europe by combining its R&D operations in Gothenburg and Frankfurt as it seeks to make Europe a bigger hub for global vehicle development.

The new unit will work with Geely’s research institute in China from the early stages of development, with plans covering vehicle platforms, product planning, market adaptation, and AI-based in-car software, the company said.

The move should cut the gap between launches in China and overseas markets to within six months for its major brands and help double the scale of vehicle development projects in Europe by 2027.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Geely’s European R&D hub builds on a decade of platform work

  • The move extends a plan that started in 2013 with Geely’s Gothenburg center, first called China Euro Vehicle Technology (CEVT) 1.
  • Engineers there helped create shared vehicle platforms such as Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), which supports more than four million vehicles worldwide 2.
  • The group also worked on the Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) electric vehicle platform family, including the jointly developed SEA-S platform with a 900-volt high-voltage system 2.
  • The new setup brings the Gothenburg group together with the Frankfurt engineering team. The Frankfurt unit keeps the legal name LTIC GmbH, while using the Geely Technology Europe brand 3.

Europe plays a bigger role in compliance and software

  • With European R&D involved from the start, Geely plans to cut the time between China launches and overseas releases to under six months 1.
  • Work includes European data privacy and cybersecurity rules within software-defined vehicle programs, plus agentic AI (AI systems that can plan and take actions toward goals), ADAS (advanced driver-assistance systems), and smart cockpits 1.
  • The company expects this approach to help overseas sales goals by giving local partners, including UK dealer networks, quicker access to products shaped for local needs 4.
  • The plan uses Europe as a yardstick for building vehicles meant to compete globally from the earliest design stage 1.
