Chinese AutoFlight reveals world’s largest eVTOL air taxi

China’s AutoFlight has unveiled the Matrix, a five-tonne eVTOL aircraft, in Kunshan, claiming it is the largest of its kind globally after a flight demonstration.

The aircraft features a 20-meter wingspan and can carry 10 passengers.

AutoFlight, backed by battery maker CATL, is among China’s leading firms in the eVTOL sector.

The company has received certification for its cargo aircraft CarryAll, which completed a cross-city delivery.

AutoFlight aims to secure passenger certification within one to two years and is exploring international markets, especially regions with less-developed infrastructure.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

AutoFlight’s new aircraft is backed by commercial deals and certification

  • The new 10-seater Matrix remains a prototype. AutoFlight’s smaller cargo aircraft already has paid demand, including a 157 million yuan (about $21.5 million) deposit-backed order for 12 aircraft from Hanyang Investment Development Group tied to Hanyang District in Wuhan 1.
  • The deal also covers a regional base. Plans include an assembly facility plus a vertiport (a takeoff-and-landing site designed for vertical aircraft) connected to a new Hanyang high-speed rail station 1.
  • Its cargo aircraft, CarryAll, became the world’s first eVTOL exceeding one-ton max takeoff weight to receive Type, Production, and Airworthiness certificates from China’s aviation authority, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) 2.
  • That certification package allows commercial operations. Many rivals still run test programs instead 2.

AutoFlight’s strategy offers a template for hardware startups and raises global competition

  • AutoFlight’s partnership with CATL includes an exclusive strategic investment and cooperation agreement valued in the hundreds of millions of dollars. It also covers joint R&D (research and development) for eVTOL aviation batteries 3.
  • This supplier-investor setup helps lock in battery access. It also brings cash for development while cutting supply risk.
  • AutoFlight’s momentum includes full certification for a cargo model plus a reported ~1,100 preorders and framework agreements. That pace tightens the race with Western competitors such as Joby and Archer 4.
  • State backing and a large home market can help Chinese firms scale operations sooner. That may shape industry standards while U.S. and European companies work through their own regulatory pathways.
