Chinese auto-parts maker rethinks expansion amid US tariffs
APT Electronics, based in Guangzhou, is reassessing its overseas expansion strategy due to potential tariff changes under the second term of US President Donald Trump.
The company specializes in automotive lighting and LED components and exports to over 20 markets, including the US.
Chairman David Xiao Guowei said that the recently imposed additional 10% tariffs on Chinese imports will not have an immediate effect but acknowledged long-term challenges.
The company is also monitoring proposed 25% tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico, where some of its clients have production facilities.
Since 2023, APT has been considering setting up production lines in North America, Southeast Asia, and Europe, with final decisions depending on timing and cost.
Despite uncertainties, Xiao remains cautiously optimistic about US-China relations, citing ongoing high-level communication and APT’s resilience during the 2019 trade war.
Founded in 2006, APT serves major clients such as Signify, Samsung Electronics, and Geely Auto with intelligent lighting products, including automotive headlamps and LED modules.
