Chinese AI models enter global top 10 in text generations rankings
Alibaba’s Qwen3-max-preview and Moonshot AI’s Kimi-K2-0905 have entered the top 10 of LMArena’s “text arena” rankings, the highest yet for Chinese-developed models.
Qwen3-max-preview, Alibaba’s largest model so far, ranked sixth, just behind OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind.
Moonshot AI’s Kimi-K2-0905 tied for eighth place with DeepSeek R1 and xAI’s Grok 4. Both models were released on September 5.
Unlike other Qwen models, Qwen3-max-preview has not been open-sourced and its full launch date is unannounced.
Kimi-K2-0905 is open-sourced and has gained traction on Hugging Face with over 4,500 downloads.
China now counts over 5,000 AI companies, up from 1,454 in 2020, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
China’s rapid AI progress reflects strategic efficiency over brute force scaling
- The performance gap between Chinese and US AI models has dramatically narrowed, shrinking from 103 points in January 2024 to just 23 points by February 2025 according to LMSYS performance metrics 2.
- This acceleration comes despite China producing fewer total models—15 notable AI models in 2024 compared to the US’s 40—suggesting Chinese developers are focusing on quality and efficiency rather than quantity 3.
- Chinese companies have developed models that perform comparably to US counterparts while using significantly fewer computational resources, as demonstrated by models like DeepSeek R1 2.
- The original article shows this strategic approach paying off, with Alibaba’s Qwen3-max-preview achieving sixth place globally and scoring 1,428 points—placing it just behind leading US models from OpenAI and Google DeepMind 1.
China’s AI ecosystem expansion signals broader industrial transformation
- The number of Chinese AI companies has exploded from 1,454 in 2020 to over 5,000 currently—equivalent to roughly one new AI company launching every 11 hours 1.
- This rapid expansion reflects China’s systematic approach to AI development, supported by the government’s 2017 “New Generation Artificial Intelligence Development Plan” aimed at making China a global AI innovation leader by 2030 2.
- China now holds 70% of global AI patents as of 2023, indicating substantial intellectual property development alongside the company growth 2.
- The combination of Alibaba’s breakthrough in top-tier model rankings with this massive ecosystem expansion suggests China is building both the foundational research capabilities and commercial infrastructure needed for sustained AI leadership.
