Chinese AI firm AICT plans $200m IPO
Beijing-based AI company AICT plans to go public in Hong Kong, aiming to raise at least US$200 million through an initial public offering (IPO).
The firm specializes in AI-powered traffic control and parking solutions, which are in use across over 50 cities in mainland China.
Yan Jun, AICT’s founder and chairman, said that the company intends to submit its listing application to the Hong Kong stock exchange by the end of April 2025.
Following this, it will seek approval from China’s securities regulator for the overseas listing.

🧠 Food for thought
A. Smart city infrastructure offers shelter from broader AI market volatility
AICT’s decision to proceed with its IPO highlights how infrastructure-focused AI companies may be more resilient to market turbulence compared to consumer or enterprise AI firms.
Unlike many AI companies that faced significant market cap losses during recent tech sell-offs (with AI chip stocks alone losing $1.16 trillion in a single Nasdaq decline), AICT provides essential services to municipal governments across 50+ Chinese cities 1.
These government contracts potentially offer more stable revenue streams compared to consumer or enterprise-focused AI companies that are more directly exposed to economic downturns or changing consumer preferences.
Similar infrastructure-focused companies like NoTraffic, which develops autonomous traffic management platforms, have also continued to attract investment despite market volatility because their technologies directly address persistent urban challenges like congestion 2.
The critical nature of traffic management systems makes them less discretionary than many other AI applications, potentially insulating AICT from immediate trade war impacts.
B. IPO timing strategies reflect contrasting approaches during market uncertainty
AICT’s “get on the runway” approach represents a distinct strategic choice compared to many tech companies delaying public offerings amid market turbulence.
Despite the worst single-day Hong Kong market decline since 1997, AICT is positioning itself to capitalize quickly if market conditions improve, contrasting with research showing many companies postponing IPOs due to trade war uncertainty 3.
This approach acknowledges the critical importance of timing highlighted in IPO research, where market conditions can change significantly during the preparation period, potentially leading to unfavorable outcomes 4.
