Chinese AI drug firm XtalPi eyes first-ever profit in 2025
Chinese AI drug discovery firm XtalPi expects to swing to a net profit of at least 100 million yuan (US$14.5 million) in 2025, marking its first full-year profit.
The projection follows a stellar 2024, where revenue surged nearly 193% to 780 million yuan (US$122.76 million), driven by narrowing losses in its intelligent robotics and drug discovery divisions.
The firm has solidified its global position through high-profile partnerships with Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, and Merck. Notably, XtalPi signed a US$6 billion deal with DoveTree Medicines and a potential US$345 million agreement with Eli Lilly.
XtalPi’s technology has significantly improved R&D efficiency. Chief Science Officer Zhang Peiyu noted that the company’s AI model boosted chemical experiment success rates from 30% to 90%, while the combination of robotics and AI could slash drug discovery timelines from four years to just one or two.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Profitability hinges on large, upfront deal payments
- The profit outlook leans more on big, sometimes one-off payments from collaborations than on steady recurring revenue 1.
- The August agreement with DoveTree Medicines (a drug developer) was valued at US$6.0 billion. It grants DoveTree exclusive worldwide rights to develop and commercialise drug candidates discovered by XtalPi 2.
- XtalPi expects gains on financial assets to top 500 million yuan. That implies its drug discovery and intelligent robotics operations still struggle to produce consistent profits on their own 3.
- It projects a first full-year profit in 2025 after earlier losses 3, 4.
AI drug discovery is shifting to a high-stakes partnership model
- XtalPi’s US$6.0 billion DoveTree deal suggests AI drug discovery companies are moving past simple service work toward larger, riskier collaborations 5.
- Some arrangements look like biotech deals. The AI firm may earn more based on later development results, rather than only upfront fees.
- For pharma partners, the setup can work like a “picks and shovels” bet. A platform provider such as XtalPi can spread risk across programs and partners, including Pfizer and Eli Lilly, instead of hinging on one clinical trial 6.
- XtalPi says AI plus automated robotics labs can speed discovery. Its chief science officer said timelines can drop to one to two years from four, which raises pressure on rivals to build integrated research-and-development (R&D) systems 7.
