Chinese AI chip firm MetaX set to trade after oversubscribed IPO
MetaX Integrated Circuits Shanghai Co. is set to start trading in Shanghai after raising US$585.8 million in an IPO, with its retail tranche oversubscribed 2,986 times.
The company designs GPUs for AI developers, gaming, and other visualization applications, debuting with a valuation of 41.8 billion yuan (US$6 billion).
MetaX’s price-to-sales ratio at launch is 56.4, compared with an average of 127.4 for peers such as Cambricon Technologies and AMD.
The founding team includes three key members who previously worked at Advanced Micro Devices, including its current CEO.
MetaX captured about 1% of China’s AI chip market last year, according to its prospectus.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
MetaX’s 1% market share exposes technical gaps with Nvidia and other chipmakers
- C600 performance lands between Nvidia’s A100 and H100 1 yet trails H100/H200 as China’s 2025 AI chip demand hits US$39.5 billion while U.S. export controls cut Nvidia sales with the H20 China‑compliant variant still not shipping 2.
- MetaX posted a 1.4 billion yuan net loss in 2024 on 743.1 million yuan of revenue after more than tenfold growth 3 while heavy R&D (research and development) spend mirrors Moore Threads’ 4.6 billion RMB loss on 3.8 billion RMB R&D 2.
- Domestic foundries’ yields (the share of chips per wafer that meet specifications) for complex AI chips stay below 20% 2, which limits C600 output that is not slated for mass production until H1 2026 3.
- A 56.4 price‑to‑sales ratio at launch, below a 127.4 peer average like Cambricon Technologies and AMD, meets a market where utilization at Chinese AI computing centers (the percentage of installed compute capacity actually used) sits below 30% 2.
Software ecosystem teams see near term openings as MetaX widens adoption
- Developers and cloud providers can build on MXMACA, the software and runtime stack for its GPUs 4. It supports over 6,000 applications and 1,000+ models, which drives demand for SDKs, framework integrations, or optimization services 4.
- Tool makers focused on performance debugging or profiling can serve MetaX users during rollout 5. Think of Meta’s MAIProf for PyTorch 5, an open‑source profiler for PyTorch (a popular machine learning framework), which helps teams find GPU idle time or tune kernel (low‑level compute routine) behavior.
- System integrators serving data centers can support MetaX work with OEM servers and internet operators 6 (large internet platforms that run data centers) by offering installation, configuration, or support as deployments grow past a 1% share.
