China’s XTransfer, Maybank partner to expand cross-border payments
XTransfer and Maybank have signed a memorandum of understanding during the Singapore FinTech Festival 2025 to develop cross-border payment and Shariah-compliant financial solutions.
XTransfer, a China-based B2B cross-border trade payment platform, and Maybank, a major bank in Asia Pacific, plan to collaborate on payment and FX services for markets including Asia Pacific, Hong Kong, the UK, and the US.
The partnership will explore the use of digital platforms, APIs, and virtual accounts to streamline payments and FX conversions.
Both companies also aim to create Shariah-compliant FX and payment products to address rising demand for Islamic finance in the region.
The agreement is expected to expand XTransfer’s reach in Southeast Asia and help Maybank strengthen its regional network.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
MoU execution risk rests on XTransfer’s footprint and Shariah approvals
- XTransfer holds payment licenses in Singapore, Hong Kong, the UK, and eight US states 1234. In Singapore, the firm has an MPI license from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) as of January 2025. In Hong Kong, it maintains an MSO license from October 2017. This base lowers early barriers for the Maybank tie-up.
- Shariah-compliant FX and payment products need extra Islamic finance approvals. Boards certify that offerings follow Islamic law. These steps add execution risk and could push back launch timing for these offerings.
- The payoff depends on fast integration with Maybank systems and quick Shariah certifications. XTransfer already works with JP Morgan, DBS, and Deutsche Bank 1. That base can limit changes to current operations.
Orchestration providers can prep connectors for future Maybank APIs
- API integrators and payment orchestration providers can build connectors for Maybank services, if released. Focus areas include FX, virtual accounts (unique account identifiers used to simplify reconciliation), and real-time payments for cross-border flows.
- BCA in Indonesia and Mashreq in the United Arab Emirates offer virtual account management APIs 56. Similar rails from Maybank could let fintech teams ship white-label (rebrandable) Islamic finance tools for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
- API integrators should engage early with Maybank for documentation and sandbox (test environment) access, if offered. That timing helps size scope and pull launch plans forward in Asia Pacific.
