China’s state-owned carmakers adopt local tech to lead EV market

China’s state-owned carmakers are partnering with local firms and using domestic technologies to strengthen their EV offerings.

Major companies like FAW Group and SAIC Motor are focusing on home-grown autonomous driving and digital cockpit systems to gain market share.

The shift is driven by younger Chinese consumers favoring private EV brands over foreign ones, pushing state-backed firms to compete with BYD and Geely Auto.

Currently, only four state-owned automakers rank among China’s top 10 EV sellers, according to the China Passenger Car Association.

BYD leads the market, delivering 2.8 million EVs globally in the first eight months of 2025, with a 21.9% year-on-year increase and a 31.6% share in China.
