China’s RedNote eyes $2.2b AI data center project

RedNote, the Shanghai-based lifestyle social media platform known in China as Xiaohongshu, is planning a 600-megawatt data center project in Inner Mongolia, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The project has a budget of about 15 billion yuan (US$2.2 billion), excluding semiconductor costs.

The facility could be built in or near Ulanqab, a city known for wind and other renewable energy projects.

RedNote has been in talks with VNET, one of China’s largest data center operators, and is targeting delivery in the first quarter of 2027, the person said.

The plan comes as China expands AI infrastructure.

The National Development and Reform Commission, the country’s top economic planner, said on July 31 that China expects 4 trillion yuan (US$592 billion) of investment in its national computing network over the next five years under the 15th five-year plan.

RedNote and VNET did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
