China’s Realme to become Oppo sub-brand in cost-cutting move

Realme is being integrated as a sub-brand of Oppo, according to a statement from the Chinese smartphone maker.

Both Realme and Oppo are owned by BBK Electronics, a consumer hardware firm based in China.

Realme’s smartphones are sold in markets such as India, Southeast Asia, and Europe.

The integration is intended to help the two brands share resources and reduce costs.

No timeline for the integration was disclosed.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Oppo-Realme integration could reshape India’s smartphone landscape

  • Vivo led India’s smartphone market by volume in 2024 1. Oppo plans to fold Realme into a sub-brand to share channels and cut costs, which could pressure rivals through joint distribution; both sit under BBK Electronics 2.
  • India shipped 151 million smartphones in 2024, up 4% year over year, so brand tie-ups have become a response to slowing volume gains 1.
  • Budget 5G phones priced at US$100–200 nearly doubled, reaching 47% share in 2024, a range where Oppo and Realme contest buyers 1.
  • Oppo’s in-house output fell as Chinese brands shifted work to Indian contract makers like Dixon Technologies, an Indian electronics manufacturing services (EMS) provider, to lower regulatory risk 3.

Indian EMS firms can win larger orders as Oppo-Realme streamline suppliers

  • Dixon Technologies became India’s largest smartphone EMS by Q2 2025, which sets it up to take more work as Oppo-Realme narrow partner lists 4.
  • By Q1 2025, about 66% of Chinese brands’ assembly was already with Indian partners in the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, which adds momentum for more consolidation 5.
  • Component vendors and original design manufacturers (ODMs) that serve both can pitch for bigger bundles as integration cuts duplicate relationships, streamlining procurement.
  • The timing aligns with policy pressure to localize output and team with Indian firms, so PLI-participating EMS providers sit in a strong spot 6.
