China’s online merchants consider price hikes amid tariffs
Chinese merchants selling online to US customers are considering price hikes to offset new tariffs imposed by the Trump administration and rising shipping costs.
The increase in costs comes after United States Postal Services (USPS) temporarily halted parcel shipments from China and Hong Kong this week.
A seller on Amazon and Temu said her cargo service provider raised fees starting Feb. 4, charging 35% more for textiles and 25% more for other goods.
Merchants face added pressure after US President Donald Trump raised tariffs on Chinese goods by 10% and removed the de minimis exemption.
The de minimis policy allowed packages under US$800 to enter the US duty-free, fueling China’s cross-border ecommerce growth.
Nearly half of all de minimis shipments came from China, according to a 2023 US congressional report, making the policy change a major setback for Chinese sellers.
