China’s Moonshot AI seeks more Nvidia chips for Kimi K4

Moonshot AI is seeking access to more Nvidia Blackwell chips to train its next model, Kimi K4, according to unnamed sources.

The Beijing-based startup this week released Kimi K3, which public benchmark tracker BenchLM says ranks fifth among 215 models overall.

Kimi K3’s debut reportedly helped trigger a selloff in AI-related stocks.

The company reportedly used Nvidia chips to train Kimi K3 despite US export controls.

Public reporting indicates that exports of some advanced AI chips to China were loosened under volume caps, but Blackwell sales to China were still reportedly awaiting approval rather than broadly authorised.

The issue matters for Nvidia, whose data-center unit generated US$41.1 billion in revenue in the quarter ended July 2025.

Chinese developers are also advancing local alternatives after DeepSeek reportedly used at least 1,000 Huawei chips to refine a 1.6-trillion-parameter model.
